Spring is right around the corner, but in our area, it's still pretty chilly outside and the flu is lurking everywhere. My niece caught a cold and couldn't go to kindergarten so she wouldn't spread the germs. That's why we spent a nice day together at home. But what to do with sick kids? We couldn't be super active so we decided to do some arts and crafts for Easter. As an Easter bunny seemed too boring, we made a super cute chick that can flap its wings - the Jumping Chick.
If you want to do this variation of the traditional wooden jumping jack with your kids, all you need is colorful paper, scissors, glue, paper fasteners and pens.
Print out our free template and cut out the stencils for this cute chick.
I drew the body and wings on yellow paper and my niece cut them out with her child-proof scissors.
The beak is made from a small orange rectangle folded in half. With two simple cuts, the chick has a mouth - it's child's play.
Our chick has just hatched out of his egg, so we put a little egg hat on top.
With some pens, she added the eyes. I guess wiggly wobbly eyes would also look great.
Then she glued the beak and some legs I had made to the chick's body.
Then came the engineering part: those small wings need to flap. We used paper fasteners to pin the wings to the body but keep them movable at the same time. Then we put a string through tiny holes next to the paper fasteners. We actually needed two tries to get it right, it has to be just above the fastener.
If you pull the string, the chick flaps the wings. It's fun to make and fun to play with. Give it a try.
