Little kids love learning to explore their senses. They like to look at, touch, squeeze, smell, taste everything in sight. That's why playdough is such a fun sensory tool. It's moldable into every different form. Let your kids roll the dough into a worm, a snail, or just a ball. Help them to form letters or make pretend food.

playdough-8Even children as young as one or two years love playdough. The only thing is that at this age, many will put it straight in their mouths. One option is to make your own playdough from kitchen ingredients that are still edible. This way you can try to teach your baby what playdough is made for and not worry if a bit gets swallowed here and there.

This is the recipe I used:

  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
  • 1 tsp. Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Salt
  • Food Coloring

1. Mix together the Water, Oil, Salt and Food Coloring (Your desired amount) over medium heat for about 3 minutes.

2. Remove from heat and add the Flour and Cream of Tartar. Mix together until dough gets thicker.

3. Put the dough on a hard surface and knead until it holds together or have your older kids help you with that.

playdoughGo for it! This play dough should last for a while if you store it in an air tight container.

Your younger kids might need help with the concept of play dough but that makes for a great opportunity to interact with them on their level. Once they get the hang of it, it's almost guaranteed fun for life.  And secretly, I still love play dough too!
