What's the plural of octopus? Octopi? Octopuses? This is a question I was asked by one of my school kids and I really had to think about that 🙂
While looking for the right answer, I had the idea to do a mobile with these sea creatures and the kids loved it.
To make this mobile with your kids, you'll need an egg carton, pipe cleaners in all sorts of colors, wire, paint, brushes, wiggly eyes, and glue (liquid). As you can see, we also added some glitter for the special look.
First, cut out several egg cups.
Then have your kids paint them in their favorite color and add glitter if they like it. Use the glue to stick the pipe cleaner as arms to the egg cup and also to stick the wiggly eyes.
Then the kids can wrap the ends of the pipe cleaners around their fingers to form them.
As a last step, make a tiny hole for the wire, attach the funny sea monsters to the wire and tie all wires together.
In the end, I found out, that both plural forms are fine, but octopuses is used more often. However that may be, the bunch of them looks amazing whatever we call them!
(Note that octopuses usually live alone 😉 )
