For youngsters, teeth brushing can be a tricky habit to master. For some parents, it can seem like an almost impossible daily struggle with their children. Why not throw some fun into the mix instead of facing it like a chore twice a day every day. Here are a few ideas to encourage proper oral hygiene with your kids.
- Check off charts. Kids get a kick out of checking things off once they're finished and having a visual reminder of their accomplishments. You can can download ours for free right here. To make it easier and long lasting, laminate or frame your chart and use a white board marker for the checks. Or buy some fun stickers and have them fill the squares.

- Set a timer for them to count down 120 seconds. Having a concrete reminder can be helpful. There's even an app by Oral-B that will scan your toothbrush and uncover a picture of different Disney characters over the two minutes while the tooth brush is doing it's job.
- Have a song that signals tooth time. This one is sung to the tune of 'Row, Row, Row your boat' and will keep your kids giggling.
Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Brush them every day. If you do not brush your teeth, they will rot away. Brush, brush, brush your teeth, keep them nice and clean. If you do not brush your teeth, they'll turn brown and green. Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Keep them pearly white. If you do not brush your teeth, your breath will not smell nice.
- Use funny toothpaste. Whether it looks like crayons or has their favorite character on the tube, it will draw your kids in.
- Read a book that tells the importance of brushing teeth. This one is good for beginners.
- Use science and try the egg experiment. In one version, you put the egg in vinegar for 2 days and see the holes and how fragile it becomes. Another experiment including coke shows your kids the real effect of sugary treats as a hands-on-experience. Put an egg in coke for about 6 hours and see how stained it becomes. Then with tooth paste and brush, have your kids see how white it becomes again. (Hint: Boil the Egg before hand to prevent the raw egg, little hands combination.)
- Bonus: Everyone knows the tooth fairy loves healthy white teeth. Make losing a tooth a magical experience with this fun tooth fairy kit.
